JOHNNY GALE’S RAINBOW SURFBOARDS HALEAKALA MINI GUN 1970 8’6” (9rgp)
Designed and shaped by Mike Hynson to be ridden at Maalaea, this Rainbow Bridge era mini-gun was Johnny Gale’s personal rider. Gale, founder of Eternal Brotherhood of Love and Mike Hynson’s business partner in Rainbow Surfboards, had a deep history that originates in Laguna Beach, from drug smuggling, to prison breaks, to evading the FBI, to psychedelic surfing. John Bredin’s artwork depicting the “Lightning Bolt” art, inspired by Mexican cannabis taken to Maui, the buds looked like “lighting bolts” and were the name of that strain of weed– this was the inspiration for the name of Lightning Bolt Surfboards. The board has the nose weight slot, full down rails, pinline work by “Peter Pinline” St. Pierre, as well as his ink work: Om, Tao, Om, Tao, full circle, on the bottom lap line. Original Hynson ‘Dolfin” fin. This is Brotherhood of Eternal Love “Orange Sunshine” to the max! Photos of Jimi Hendrix by Mike McCurdy, who was given this board from Johnny Gale during the filming of “Rainbow Bridge”. This gorgeous Hynson Rainbow has been on Maui for 40 years – it has the incredible detailed artwork, pinlines, Hynson downrails, this board shines – very rare indeed– a gorgeous representation of a unique era. Pedigree, Provenance, Pristine. A star of the show.
