We sent 27 single use cameras out to some of our favorite photographers, they shot stuff with it, then mailed it back to us. We developed the film and are sharing the results with you (and the photographers) now. In this instant, digital age, we want to pay homage to a snapshot photo process we grew up with ourselves — waiting for the film to develop and being surprised by the results. These 27 Frames belong to Lauren Ross.

Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself.

Lauren Ross. I grew up in a town with about two thousand residents in Vermont and spent my high school days and twenties traveling around the world and racing for the United States Ski Team. I now call Santa Barbara my home and live with my boyfriend and his three children.

How did you first get into photography?

My mother is a photographer and I’d assist her when I was younger. We grew up with a small dark room in the basement of our house. More importantly, she taught me to observe light and develop my own taste.

Film or digital?

I love both film and digital. For commercial work and to make a living, I use mostly digital, but it’s always nice to slow down and shoot with film. I own a Pentax 6×7 and I like to take that on trips where I know I will have some time to experiment.

When was the last time you used a single use (disposable) camera?

I recently went on photo trip to the East Cape of Baja. I brought a few waterproof disposable cameras and got some fun and unexpected results.

What did you decide to shoot with your camera for this project?

For this project, I tried to shoot bits and pieces of my daily life versus curating an experience, so it was mostly just happenings from the week. Kids playing, expressions, hiking through the Santa Barbara mountains, rainy evenings.

Did you have any interesting experiences along the way?

Yeah for sure. It’s a good reminder of process versus results. With digital, you’re seeing the results and critiquing in real time versus just observing, shooting and moving on.

What was your favorite image from the roll?

My favorite image is of the fallen Eucalyptus trees. I love the texture.

Matt Titone

A goofy-footed graphic designer who hails from the first state, Delaware. After attending Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL then graduating from SCAD in Savannah, GA with a BFA in Graphic Design and Illustration, Matt moved to NYC and found work as a freelance designer and art director. In 2006 he moved west to Venice, CA where he co-founded ITAL/C Studio and now resides a bit further north in Oxnard.
