Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself.

Born in Calgary, Canada. Raised on a sailboat through the South Pacific and Caribbean. High school in Vancouver. 15 years in Australia studying and working as a photographer. Work as a fashion photographer. Love to surf, travel, eat burgers, go on adventures. Currently living in LA with my awesome wife and dog. Looking for new friends.

How did you first get into photography?

My mom says that I used to steal their camera as a young kid and just take pictures. As far as I can remember, I loved shooting my friends, skateboard, snowboard, go hiking and cliff dive in the beautiful canyons of North Vancouver. Pretty much just documenting my life growing up. In Australia around 2001 I finally studied photography and then assisted fashion and advertising photographers. 

Film or digital?

I studied film and dark room techniques at college and loved it, but once the digital age hit (2 years later) I embraced it. I love digital, but still give my images a nostalgic film treatment. I still have film point and shoot cameras that I run a few rolls of film through a year. 

When was the last time you used a single use (disposable) camera?

Probably about 6 years ago for a photographer friend’s wedding. Apparently he had some pretty crazy images as the night went on. 

What did you decide to shoot with your camera for this project?

I got the camera about 3 days before my wife and I were permanently moving to LA from Sydney. I wanted to mainly shoot at Bondi Beach in Sydney as this is where I spend most of my free time. I shot some there, then moved and shot a bit in LA and surrounding areas, but then saved it for my trip back to Sydney mid January. 

Did you have any interesting experiences along the way?

I’m Canadian and I had lived in Australia for 15 years. On Dec 22, 2105 we packed up our life and made the move to LA. Yes it was and still is very interesting. That is my idea of a great life: going on as many adventures as possible. Life gets boring without travel. In the last 10 years, I’ve surfed in crocodile infested river mouths of Costa Rica, lived in 3 different cities, been on a train across the outback of Australia, I fell off a boat at night and nearly drowned in North Indonesia, and I’ve climbed a 10,000 foot volcano in Bali to propose to my wife at the top, just to mention a few. Not to mention all of the interesting an wonderful people that you meet in my line of work. Many of them become great friends. 

What was the biggest challenge (if any) you had with the project?

The biggest challenge is trying to make most of the shots count. You can’t take a crap load then edit them later like you can in digital. A lot of thought (well not too much) went into each frame as to not waste them. And then the other thing was to try to have a theme. Half way through the roll, I moved to LA and thought that I might save the shots until I went back to Sydney so I could maintain the beachy theme I started with.
