For 35 years Alan Lomax devoted his life to recording and collecting rare folk music from all over the world. He was the first to record Woody Guthrie and Muddy Waters as well as the blues guitarist Fred McDowell whose songs would later be covered by the Rolling Stones, Jack White and the like. A decade after Lomax’s death his treasure – some 5,000 hours of recordings, 400,000 feet of film and 3,000 videotapes – are being digitized. 17,000 tracks will be available for streaming the end of February to launch his long imagined Global Jukebox project. Awesome culture win.
A New Englander through and through, Drew grew up in Connecticut / New Hampshire and got over educated in Boston. He also lived on a beach in Southern California for some years. Film, photography, music and literature monopolize his time these days.
