RIP Donald Takayama 1944 – 2012

RIP Donald Takayama

Yesterday saw a very sad day in the surfing world as we lost one of our best. Donald Takayama moved to California at age 12 from Waikiki after Dale Velzy saw a board that he had made. Since then, he and Velzy remained close friends and Donald went on to be known as one of, if not the best longboard shaper ever. He mentored such greats as Joel Tudor, David Nuuhiwa and Kassia Meador. Early reports say Donald passed due to a fatal heart attack at 68. Heaven just got one hell of a surfer and shaper. He will truly be missed.
