The Latest In Kelly Slater Radness

Kelly Slater is a busy dude to say the least. Besides being the eldest (and by far most decorated) man on the pro tour, he has his new sustainable clothing line, Outerknown and his hands in a slew of other businesses like Firewire, Purps, and a wave pool company to name just a few. It is super exciting to see how our childhood hero and champion has grown, adapted and matured over the years. Always in the spotlight and forever ahead of the curve. Besides the obvious competitive and free-surfing feats, the champ has shown us three particularly awesome things on the interwebs in the past couple weeks:

Kelly Slater is a busy guy to say the least.

1. A PEEK BEHIND THE CURTAIN

In this video by photographer Todd Glaser for Monster Children, we get a rare, somewhat unfiltered view of Kelly’s world of constant travels, doing photoshoots and interviews, other business stuff with the Outerknown crew, managing his own brand, and of course surfing as much as possible everywhere in between.

2. CHARITY AND KEEPING-IT-REAL-NESS

Every year Kelly goes on a trip to Tavarua with his closest buds. Unless you’ve been under a rock the past month, you probably noticed that he held a fundraiser contest with Omaze for anyone to have a chance to win a spot on that trip by donating to some great charities. True to the rules of the contest, a random winner was chosen. When Kelly announced her name (plus the fact that she doesn’t surf), the internet exploded and people said some pretty rude things. An unfortunate target for many internet trolls, Kelly fired back this time by calling out the most loud-texted haters publicly on his Instagram account. Full coverage and more comments can be found over at Stab.

3. SPOT SHARING

We here at Indoek have been huge fans of the Outerknown brand so far. From the clothes themselves, the core values to the overall art direction, brand photography and aesthetic to the stories they tell on their site, everything has struck the right chord with us so far. It’s fairly rare to hear surfers give up their favorite spots, so last week it was a treat to see Kelly share a few of his favorite travel destinations with the masses on the site:

1. Tavarua Island, Fiji
2. North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii
3. Avalon, NSW, Australia
4. Anglet, France
5. Jeffery’s Bay, South Africa

For the greatest surfer of all time who has travelled nearly everywhere on the planet with surf, I’m sure he is keeping his true favorites close to his chest and under his hat, but it was at least cool to hear what he had to say about the places he did share. Check out the full article here.

There were probably a ton of other awesome things Mr. Slater did last week that we missed, but these were certainly some highlights for us. Until next week, keep up the constant radness Kelly. And if you happen to read this, please know that even though the negativity and the haters seem to have the loudest voices in the digital world, you are still a hero and inspiration to most of us out here in the real world. We could not imagine a better champion of our sport and way of life as surfers. Oh, and if anyone happens to bail on your Tavy trip, save us a seat!
