Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum.” Lucas Lecacheur is surf Dada, surf goth, “Surf-Chocula” as Mark Cunningham has also described him. He is a provocateur by definition, living and breathing his art, his brand and role as “Perfect Designs.” It is also by this perfect design that Lucas resides in an apartment in Paris overlooking the historic cemetery in the 18th arrondissement.

Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself.

Bonjour, my name is Lucas, I was born in Paris, I’m now traveling the world making surfboards and rock’n roll history.

What are your favorite parts of your home?

The view, the Montmartre Cemetery and the Sacré-Coeur make it a special place. I also love the plaster arch, the curtains, the wooden walls and the sound of the crows.

What are your favorite parts about Paris and the area in which you live?

Paris is in constant movement, and I’m never getting bored with it, it’s a big artistic hub with lots of creative minds in such a small perimeter. A big plus in this city is that you can walk everywhere, the food is tasteful and people are curious. That part of the 18th I live in is way more quiet, it’s nice to be a bit off sometimes, it’s still really close to Pigalle and concert venues. 

Tell us more about Perfect Designs. What is the backstory for the project and persona?

The project was born in 2019, when music was gonna be over forever, we canceled our tours and postponed our album release. Bored one night, I drew The Cowboy Boot surfboard, sent a picture to my best friend Fernando, we were crying laughing tears about the possibility of such designs (it’s always a good sign when it happens). The next day, wearing a suit and black sunglasses I called him on FaceTime, and, without any warning and after setting racks, I pulled an old board and proceeded to murder the tail in a bat shape. A performance for one audience, he then said in shock, “That’s a perfect design.”

Describe the inspiration behind your sculptural boards. 

It comes from multiple references, objects, architecture, films, games, years of aesthetic research and rock’n roll.

I ride them all.

When did you first start surfing and fall in love with it? 

I was 8 when I took my first wave, I remember getting involved when I was 10.

What are your favorite parts of surf culture in general these days and why – what is exciting and inspiring to you?

I love everything about surfing, from stylish soul surfing to the WSL sport. Everyone is surfing for different reasons and purposes. I found my purpose in conjugating surfing with the revolutionary artistic act, all that interests me right now is going where no one has been.

What about surfing and surf culture do you wish you could change?

I actually think everything is in its right place. I wish to inspire those who are brave enough to explore other things and have a sensitivity for it. Bring joy and laughs to others, some people also hate it and it’s completely fine. If you stand for something you can never please everyone and I believe humanity is beautiful in its variety and differences.

Any parting thoughts, words of wisdom, or sage advice?

Fail, learn, then fail again. Don’t be scared, it’s gonna be ok.
